Institut Agronomique et Veterinaire Hassan II
Marocco
Description: Hassan II Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine Institute (IAV Hassan II) is located in Rabat, Morocco. It is a leading university centre in relationship to agriculture and rural development. Within IAV Hassan II, Pr. Mohamed Taher SRAÏRI is currently the Head of the School of Agricultural Sciences, with a specialization in Animal Systems. His PhD dissertation was dedicated to a characterization of dairy systems in Morocco through a holistic approach of farmers’ practices. Nowadays, his research topics deal mainly with crop-livestock systems, and particularly resources’ uses (capital, land, water and work) and their efficiency. Prof. M.T. Sraïri has published more than 60 articles in peer reviewed journals and has participated to several scientific conferences, as well as international research consortia. He is currently working on oasis farming systems, as well as camel systems, and has several experiences with extensive livestock systems in remote areas, particularly in mountain areas. Even though such extensive systems may appear marginal in comparison to dairy production in irrigation schemes or intensive poultry farming, they ensure sustainable livelihoods for local populations and allow maintaining mountain landscapes, a vital role in an arid country where almost 40% of the working people are still employed within the agricultural sector.

Instituto de Montaña
Peru
Description: Instituto de Montaña (IM) is a non governmental organization working over the last 25 years supporting initiatives at the interphase of ecosystem conservation and economic development in partnership with mountain communities in the Andes region of Peru and in close cooperation with partner organizations in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia. We are a multidisciplinary team of diverse social and natural scientists who follow, at the core of their practice, participatory action research approaches. In response to mountain communities' priorities and our own geographic focus we are working on issues of water security and climate change. More specifically, our work centers on the connection between sound management of grasslands and livestock and the improvement of water available for humans, animals and crops; the affirmation of indigenous knowledge and development of mechanisms to foster the dialogue with academic disciplines and the research community; the dissemination Of knowledge and the promotion of policies that recognize and support the contribution that mountain peoples and the multiple services that their cultures and ecosystems offer to the wellbeing of the planet.

Instituto Argentino de Nivología, Glaciología y Ciencias Ambientales (IANIGLA) - CONICET
Argentina
Description: The Argentinean Institute of Nivology, Glaciology and Environmental Sciences (IANIGLA) is an official institution created through an agreement between the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo) and the Government of the Province of Mendoza (Argentina). The main mission of IANIGLA is to contribute to the knowledge of the factors that regulate the past and present environmental dynamics of western Argentina, with emphasis on the abiotic and biotic natural resources present in the Andes Mountains. A critical mass of researchers in geological, geochemical, paleontological, hydrological, meteorological, biological and social sciences has been formed, with a growing integration between the research groups that comprise it and with strong interaction with governmental, academic and social institutions.
The working group “Dendrochronology and Environmental History” has been linked to the approach Sustainable Development in Highland. This group has extensive experience in paleoenvironmental and historical studies, strongly linked to environments in the Andes mountain range. The study of the dynamics of natural ecosystems has a strong correlation with the interaction between these systems and climate change, with the consequent impact on ecosystem services. The human groups that historically and currently develop their life and activities in these mountain areas are directly conditioned to these conditions. For this reason, the researchers in this group aim to integrate studies of environment and society. The interrelationship between environmental degradation and silvopastoral management for improving resource use and sustainable development are elements of interest in our group. In addition, research on socio-political processes related to the management of natural resources and power disputes related to environmental issues are addressed. Within the framework of the precepts on political ecology of linked mountain and plains communities, there is interest in analyzing socio-environmental conflicts, the degree to which groups participate in these social processes and in their interrelation with the environment for rational use of natural and cultural resources, within the Inclusive Sustainable Development concept.
The research group is made up of researchers from various disciplines, with an interdisciplinary approach from different scalar perspectives in time and space, favoring a global perception of the implications of disputes around natural and cultural resources, spatial and regional planning, land use change and the Human, and their economic and social geography approach. The Highlands.3 project is carried out in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Human, Social and Environmental Sciences (INCIHUSA), the Argentine Dryland Research Institute (IADIZA) and the Institute of Geography (Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, National University of Cuyo-UNCUYO).

Universidad Externado de Colombia
Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales - Programa de Geografía / Centro de Investigaciones sobre Dinámica Social CIDS, Área Conflicto y Dinámica social
Colombia
Description: The Geography program trains its students conceptually and technically to understand the spatial and territorial dynamics as a result of the relationships that are constituted between humans and the rest of nature with the mediation of culture, economic and social structure, politics and demographic dynamics at the international, national, regional and local scales. To this end, it recognizes the intensification of the processes of economic, technological, cultural and political globalization, as well as the growing environmental crisis, have strengthened the need for geographical analysis of the problems and challenges of the relationships between humans and between humans and the rest of nature, as a means to understand and find alternatives to the crucial problems of societies in their territories.
The teachers of the geography program are part of the different areas of the Center for Research on Social Dynamics (CIDS). Here they develop training activities for undergraduate and graduate research, with the purpose of understanding the country's problems and collaborating in their solution. This project links both the geography program and the Area of Conflict and Social Dynamics to identify the transformations of mountain productive structures associated with the food supply of Colombian Andean cities.
